About us

Spanish Valley Vineyards & Winery is one of the most unexpected wine destinations in the American West. Located just seven minutes south of downtown Moab, our six-acre estate sits among the red rock canyon landscape of Spanish Valley, surrounded by the same dramatic geology that defines Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

We are Moab’s only winery and one of the few vineyards in the region producing estate-grown, estate-bottled wines.

The character of our wines begins with the land. The iron-rich desert soils of Spanish Valley, combined with warm sunny days and cool mountain nights, create ideal conditions for aromatic white varietals and structured red wines. The result is wine that reflects the unique landscape of the Utah desert.

At Spanish Valley Vineyards, every step of the process happens on site. Our grapes are grown, fermented, and bottled on the estate — ensuring that every bottle tells the story of this land from vine to glass.

Visitors come for the wine, but they stay for the setting. Tastings, vineyard tours, live music events, and weddings make the winery one of Moab’s most memorable gathering places.

History

Spanish Valley Vineyards began as an agricultural research project initiated by Utah State University in the late 1970s. As uranium mining declined in southeastern Utah, researchers explored whether wine grapes could become a viable crop for the region.

The experiment revealed that Spanish Valley’s soils, sunlight, and dramatic day-to-night temperature swings created excellent conditions for wine grapes.

From those early trials grew what is now one of Utah’s most beloved wine destinations. Today, the winery produces estate wines enjoyed by locals, Utah wine enthusiasts, and the millions of visitors who travel to Moab each year.

Spanish Valley wines have also earned recognition in national competitions, including a Silver Medal at the New World International Wine Competition for our estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vineyard & Terroir

Our six-acre vineyard lies at approximately 4,000 feet above sea level in the heart of Spanish Valley.

The growing environment is shaped by:

• Long, sun-filled desert days

• Cool nighttime temperatures

• Mineral-rich, iron-oxide soils

• Low natural soil vigor that concentrates flavor

These conditions produce grapes with remarkable aromatic intensity and depth.

Our primary estate plantings include:

Riesling

Our signature white varietal and one that thrives in the desert climate.

Gewürztraminer

Highly aromatic with notes of lychee, rose petal, and spice.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Structured, full-bodied reds with dark fruit and depth.

Syrah

Bold and peppery with rich dark fruit character.

Winemaking & Aging

Our winemaking philosophy is simple: honor the land.

We do not attempt to imitate the style of wines from Napa or Sonoma. Instead, we focus on expressing the distinctive character of Spanish Valley.

All grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in small batches.

White wines are carefully temperature-controlled during fermentation to preserve their natural aromatics, while our red wines undergo extended maceration and careful oak aging to develop structure and complexity.

Every bottle carries the same promise:

Grown here. Made here. Bottled here.
