About us

The Cortijo El Cura winery lies about 1000 meters above sea level, between the Sierra Nevada and the Sierra de Gádor; specifically within the boundary of the town of Laujar de Andarax, the capital of La Alpujarra of Almería. The winery is immersed in history and nature thanks to its unique location within the Sierra Nevada Natural Park - the most important in Spain because of the high amount of locally specific types of flora - as well as due to being a village in the region of La Alpujarra.

History

We, the Sánchez Vizcaíno’s family, founded the Cortijo El Cura winery in 1998 with the aim of offering the first organic wines in the province of Almería. Perhaps key to the success of this family business lies in the cooperation, the work and the consistancy of all its members. We make high quality and completely organic products by respecting the environment and betting on sustainable development: for in our opinion if the development is not sustainable, it should not be considered as development.

Vineyard & Terroir

Differentiation

We produce our wines according to traditional norms of vinification, ensuring a strict hygiene throughout our facilities and by using state-of-the-art-machinery.

The production is limited, in that we are based on quality and not quantity. We only use grapes from our vineyards. Which comprise of a country property of 25 hectares. Our plantation has been cultivated according to the Organic Farming Production Regulation since the very beginning, more than ten years ago. We have got 15 hectares of old vineyards. At least 8 hectares were planted more than 40 years ago. We cultivate some native types of vines from Laujar. The following ones are some examples of them: Jaén Blanca and Jaén Negra, amongst others. We also have other ones more spread out such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay or Tempranillo.

The character and the personality of our wines are defined firstly by our family way of working which is itself consistent with the environment around us. Secondly by our belief in that which we produce. We strongly bet on organic production, in that we think that it offers us the most healthy diet possible.

Our aim has always been, and continues to be, making a high quality food, as organic as possible and respecting the environment in order to fight for a healthy diet and a sustainable development of the ecosystem.

Awards

Gold medal: Sierra de Gádor (young red wine) and Oro del Llano (white wine) in EcoRacimos 2010: National Award of wines produced from grapes of organic farming.

Recommendation: Sierra de Gádor (young red wine) in the wine tasting for the BioFach International Wine Award 2008.

Silver medal: Sánchez Vizcaíno (reserva red wine) in EcoRacimos 2007: National Award of wines produced from grapes of organic farming.

The winery has been awarded with more awards besides from those mentioned above.

Award (2005) for the Environment protection, sustainable development and innovative enterprise.
