About us
Located one hour north of Charlotte, NC and only twenty minutes from the Virginia border, it is a "hidden gem in the Yadkin Valley with quite a story to tell."
History
The site of a historic grist mill built in 1896, and gracing a special spot where two creeks join together to become one, Elkin Creek Vineyard is a one-of-a-kind destination. Established in 2001, Elkin Creek Vineyard bottled their first vintage in the fall of 2005. The winery overlooks the Big Elkin Creek, the Grassy Creek, and the century old Elkin Creek Mill.
Vineyard & Terroir
Elkin Creek Vineyard is located at 36 degrees latitude in the northern hemisphere and shares qualities with some very notable wine regions around the globe. The soil is a granitic red-clay, mica, and schist structure similar to the “terra rossa” area of Tuscany. However, being located inland and more humid our climate is more similar to Bordeaux, France. With a superb combination of sun, soil, and soul Yadkin Valley wineries are ideally located in the North Carolina region that is rapidly gaining a reputation for growing high-quality grapes and producing world-class award-winning wines. In recognition of these unique features, the federal government approved the Yadkin Valley American Viticulture Area (AVA), effective February 7, 2003. The vineyards are comprised of six lush acres of Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Malvasia Bianca.
Winemaking & Aging
The vineyards are comprised of six lush acres of Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Malvasia Bianca. We also source our additional varieties from nearby vineyards within the Yadkin Valley A.V.A. such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Chambourcin, and Dornfelder. The wines are produced and bottled on site and aged in our underground cellar in French Oak barrels.
