About us

Château de Pommard is the place where nature, wine education and the chance to fall in love with life converge among the vines.

History

For almost three centuries, the winemaking families of Château de Pommard have left their indelible footprints in the soil. From the Micaults, the first family of Pommard, to the Marey-Monges, the most influential dynasty in all of Burgundy, and now our family, Famille Carabello-Baum, has the honor of guiding the estate forward into the future.

Clos Marey-Monge, at the heart of the domain, has been producing one of the greatest expressions of Pinot Noir for more than two millennia. In July 2015, UNESCO declared the Clos a world heritage protected Climat of Burgundy. The seven clay and limestone rich terroir of Clos Marey-Monge make it the largest and most interesting monopole in the Côte d’Or. It is from these terroir that we distill the very essence of Burgundy into three acclaimed wines – Vivant Micault, Clos Marey-Monge Monopole and Simone. Accompanying the wines of Clos Marey-Monge, we also produce Grand Cru, Premier Cru, Village and Bourgogne wines from appellations across the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune.

But, Château de Pommard is more than just a winery. It is a lifestyle. It’s a place to slow down, reconnect with the wonders of nature, walk among the vines and live a happy and healthy life. It’s where you will experience the five senses of fine wine: the sight of a magnificent vineyard, the sound of a bottle being opened, the smell of aromatic wine swirling inside of the glass, the taste of elegant wine on palate, and the feel of a wine’s supple texture.

Château de Pommard is a place to fall in love with life.

Vineyard & Terroir

Each of Clos Marey-Monge’s seven clay and limestone rich plots – Simone, Chantrerie, Les Paules, Grand Champs, 75 Rangs, Micault and Émilie – has its own unique soil and microclimate. Simone and Chantrerie contain two of the highest clay density levels recorded in Burgundy. The complete clos spans 20 hectares in surface area and is contained within a two meter tall stone wall, erected in 1812 by Nicolas-Joseph Marey-Monge.

With 150 million years of earth’s history beneath it, Clos Marey-Monge rests on an alluvial fan known as the Avant-Dheune Valley dejection cone, presenting ideal conditions for the notoriously demanding Pinot Noir varietal to flourish. The clos was awarded première cuvée status in Jules Lavalle’s comprehensive classification of the region’s soils in 1855. And now under the wing of Winemaker Emmanuel Sala and Biodynamic Specialist, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, Clos Marey-Monge is both biodynamically and sustainably farmed.

We produce three Clos wines from Clos Marey-Monge. Grapes from Clos Marey-Monge’s seven distinct terroir are hand-picked, sorted, fermented, and barrel aged separately for 18 to 28 months – depending on the wine and vintage. Then on one magic day the seven cuvée are blended into Vivant Micault (from the younger vines) and Clos Marey-Monge Monopole. Simone, our limited production clos cuvée is created only from the prized Simone plot. All of the wines continue to develop overtime and are unquestionably worth cherishing for many years to come.
